Image Manipulation Project: Artist Statement and Critical Evaluation
Artist Statement
The title of my project is “Feeding Origami Animals”. My
project has a person feeding the animals with a flower. The thing is that the
animals look nothing like the regular animals that we see every day. Instead,
the animals have patterns on them, and they are made from paper.
My project has gone through an evolution process. Originally
it was supposed to look much simpler. It was supposed to end up being fully coloured
with just the person holding a paper flower and being surrounded or in front of
paper animals with no special effects or anything like that. But after starting
to make the actual image and not just some rough cuts I made earlier a thought
crossed my mind “animals from paper actually existing is unrealistic” so I have
decided how about I make it look a bit more unreal but with a deeper meaning
behind it in a way.
So, in the end I used a special effects brush and added some
sparkles around the flower and the animals. I have also added a halo thing on
the model in the photo.
The meaning of this piece in the end is that we try to
experiment with animals and their genetics thinking that we are some gods or
angels while doing that and feeding them things they shouldn’t eat.
Critical Evaluation
After viewing my work, I have realised how much better it
turned out then I expected. I do love how the sparkles and the halo add a magical
twist in a sense to my work.
The reason why I made the image black and white in the end
is because it gives a feeling of darkness behind the whole image, which does
suit the meaning behind the whole project.
I was planning on making the animals coloured to show the
beautiful colour of the paper, but I couldn’t figure out how to do it without
making the patches of grass, that I have made to put over the model and the
animals, turn back into their original colour.
I could have done a better job at adjusting the characters
to fit more into the background but for now that’s the best I could do without
making them look odder.
